Having long lamented their inability to control and put their stamp on matches, Borussia Dortmund have been looking for a new midfield complex. The introduction of Thomas Delaney certainly helps, but it sounds like another midfielder could be arriving in the shape of Axel Witsel.
According to reports, the Belgium international is set to leave China after an impressive 2018 FIFA World Cup. Despite some good performances in China, the 29-year-old looks set to move back to Europe and make a crack at the top leagues once again.
An impressive midfielder with a great idea for a pass and who is also very impressive in the air, he would provide the right kind of balance in the middle of the park for BVB. Witsel has long been linked with a move back to Europe, and this time a move of around €20m is being mooted.
Having spent around 18 months in China, it would appear that the time for a return to the top European leagues has come for Witsel. The Belgian would provide Dortmund with another midfielder who can do more than just pass, and would offer extra stamina and power in the middle of the park.
Given the general playing style in the Bundesliga, this signing makes a lot of sense. The main stumbling block will be if Witsel will take the incredible drop in wages needed to make it into the BVB pay structure, or if his remuneration in China excess his desire to return to the UEFA Champions League.
