As one of the most exciting signings in recent Bayern Munich history, Corentin Tolisso has done a lot to justify the hype. The France World Cup winner returned to Bavaria looking certain to take his lofty qualities to the next level for the German champions. That, though, will need to wait: it’s been confirmed that the midfield has torn his anterior cruciate ligament during the win over Bayer Leverkusen.

Bayern came out 3-1 winners, after a Wendell penalty had put the away side surprisingly in front. The win was soured though with the injury, despite having drawn his side level with this 10th-minute equaliser.

“Corentin Tolisso sustained a serious injury in Bayern’s home Bundesliga encounter with Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, the Munich club’s medical uni ascertained following an examination after the game,” the club stated in an official club statement.

“The French World Cup winner rupture a cruciate ligament and the medial meniscus in his right knee and will undergo surgery on Sunday. The midfielder will be sidelined for several months.”

This will be a crucial blow for Bayern, who were hoping the 24-year-old could take those critical next steps in the years to come. Bought as the club record signing, the former Lyon man had impressed massively in France and looked set to justify the transfer hype following his big-money move to Bayern.

The injury immediately looked bad, with the tackle from Kerim Bellarabi putting the Frenchman under immediate strain. It did not take long for the message to come out regarding the injury, and it now falls upon Bayern to come up with a solution. With the midfielder contributing an impressive six goals in his first season, finding a replacement will take time.
