As the Bundesliga gets ready to return after its winter break, some interesting quotes emerged from the various camps at both Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. Seen as the protagonists of the title race, with Borussia Monchengladbach and RB Leipzig looking to stay involved, this season brings with it many engrossing stories. With BVB clear at the top, and with Bayern playing TSG Hoffenheim on Friday night, it’s going to be intriguing to see how Borussia Dortmund – away to Leipzig on Saturday – handle being ‘the hunted’, according to the Bayern legend, who said: “Dortmund are the hunted and Bayern are the hunters,
“That is a new role for both teams — whoever can handle it best will win the title.”
And he’s right – this is an interesting second half to the season. Dortmund have a team with experience, but no real experience of winning titles. With many of their hardest games to come in the second half of the season involving away games to elite Bundesliga opponents – including Bayern – winning the league feels incredibly hard.
For many fans, their lead at the top feels even more precarious thanks to a defensive crisis. The loss of Dan Axel-Zagadou, Omer Toprak, Manuel Akanji and new signing Leonardo Belardi being at the U20 South American Championships, numbers are thin on the ground. With tough away games to come, how long can Dortmund and their depleted defence hold out against a team that always relishes a battle?
