When Borussia Dortmund missed out on the title in 2018/19, fans were obviously gutted. Up against an FC Bayern Munich side that felt in disarray, Dortmund took the Bavarians to the very limit. However, they lost a sizable gap at the top with a poor second half to the season, relative to their first half of the season. Fans, though, can immediately feel a little more optimistic: the club has just signed a trio of fine players.
The sale of Christian Pulisic to Chelsea might have been a minor blow, too, given his potential. However, he fee that was brought in has quickly been used to mostly cover three major coups. Nico Schulz signed from Hoffenheim, while Thorgan Hazard completed a long-expected move from Borussia Monchengladbach. By far the biggest coup, though, was the signing of Bayer Lervekusen star Julian Brandt.
Brandt, often linked with Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, has joined the Schwarzgelben on an exciting long-term deal. As one of the best players in the Bundesliga in 2018/19, Brandt discovered the talent that had made him among the most interesting players in German football a few short years ago.
Aged just 23, Brandt could be part of a long-term future at Dortmund. Schulz, too, offers a long-term solution at left-back, while Hazard offers excellent attacking competition in every position. With tentative links to Mario Mandzukic of Juventus, too, Dortmund could in theory wind up with a very strong squad for the season to come.
Have they missed the chance to catch Bayern at their weakest, though?
