Vincent Kompany takes pride in Bayern Munich’s defensive resilience against Bayer Leverkusen.
Saturday’s intense 0-0 draw saw Bayern Munich lose the possession battle for the first time under Kompany’s leadership. They also failed to register a shot on target—something that hadn’t happened since 2008.
Bayern struggled to maintain possession in Leverkusen’s half but held firm defensively, securing a second consecutive Bundesliga clean sheet with a mix of discipline and a few fortunate bounces off the crossbar.
“Ideally, we always want to press and win the ball back quickly,” Kompany said (via @iMiaSanMia). “But when a team earns the right to play, we have to defend. Leverkusen did that today—they controlled possession and pressed well, so we had to adapt. In that sense, I have to give massive credit to my team for their mentality and defending. We’ve played many games where we scored plenty, so this is a point we can take home.”
Kompany has been emphasizing compact defending in training, and Bayern’s backline delivered when it mattered, securing a crucial point to maintain their eight-point lead atop the Bundesliga.
